"Tell Truth With a Camera... "

This was the maxim of Clifton Edom, founder of the Photojournalism Sequence in the 1940s. He challenged aspiring photographers to document the world around them as honestly as possible. Ever since, the school has prepared dedicated professionals in photojournalism and picture editing, and continues to help chart the course for the future.

We are bombarded by information and now, more than ever, the world receives information visually. So, while new technologies challenge working photojournalists, the tenets of journalism remain central to profession and our teaching mission. Students gain valuable historical perspective - from the contributions of Mathew Brady and his Civil War battlefield photography, to the influential photo essays of LIFE magazine, to the stunning pictures of National Geographic, to the current state of American newspaper photojournalism.

At MU we are blessed with professional programs started more than 50 years ago by Cliff and Vi Edom, that bring the world to our door. Pictures of the Year is judged here every year for about three weeks, bringing with it some of the world's best pictures. The College Photographer of the Year Competiton provides a forum for student work to be recognized and encouraged. The Missouri Photo Workshop is perhaps the nation's premiere photojournalism workshop - where a dozen photographers and editors teach documentary story-telling to dozens of young professionals during an intensive week of planning, shooting and editing in small towns throughout the state.. Each of these programs brings some of the world's best photographers, picture editors and educators here as judges or faculty members. And, we have strongly-motivated graduate and undergraduate students in our program who create a community of support and challenge.
